// Finance Business Partner

Numbers that explain the business, not just record it.

More than 15 years in finance at a specialist veterinary hospital, from accounts assistant to Head of Finance & Operations. I produce the accounts, and I also help the people running the business understand what the numbers mean and what to do about them.

Why me

I came to finance as a career changer. After working in the printing industry, I went back to college in 2008 to study accountancy. In 2010 I joined Fitzpatrick Referrals, a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital, as an Accounts Assistant. I was promoted to Finance Manager in 2016 and to Head of Finance & Operations in 2025.

For most of that time I've had a foot in both camps. I own the management accounts and take them through to statutory accounts at year end. I lead a finance team of five. I also help run the hospital and step in for the Hospital Director when needed. That's why my reports are written for the people who have to act on them.

How I partner with a business

  1. 01

    Understand

Learn how the business makes and spends money: the services, the pricing, the busy weeks and the quiet ones.

  2. 02

    Get it right

Accurate ledgers, reconciliations, accruals and prepayments, so everyone can trust the numbers built on top.

  3. 03

    Explain

Reports that say what changed and why, in plain English, for owners, managers and clinicians.

  4. 04

    Improve

Use what the numbers show to fix prices, cut waste and make the monthly routine faster.

Logbook note: the best finance report is one someone acts on. If a report isn't changing any decisions, I'll question whether it's needed.

What I do

AREA 01

Management accounts & year end

  • Monthly management accounts: revenue analysis, prepayments, accruals, fixed assets, subscriptions and aged debt.
  • VAT & cash flow: quarterly VAT returns and quarterly cash-flow statements.
  • Year end: accounts prepared through to statutory accounts stage.
  • Audit: pre-planning meetings, supporting schedules and analyses, and acting as main point of contact while the auditors are on site.
  • Stock take: running the annual count, supporting the auditor's visit and agreeing the final figures.

The shift Accounts that are on time, audit-ready and easy to trust.

AREA 02

Reporting & analysis

  • Monthly performance reports: revenue, operations, imaging and appointment-diary reports for the leadership team.
  • On-demand clinical & sales data: answering questions from vets, residents and interns, such as "how many of this surgery did we do last year?" or "how many cases had this diagnosis?".
  • Weekly checks: billing accuracy, lab tests and account terms, so problems are caught early.
  • Statutory surveys: monthly and quarterly ONS and Bank of England returns.

The shift Questions answered with data in hours, not guesses.

AREA 03

Pricing & cost control

  • Price reviews: building the master product list, modelling proposed increases and feeding new prices into treatment estimates.
  • Bundle costing: checking that packages such as anaesthesia, hip-replacement implants and disposables still cover their true costs.
  • Supplier price tracking: invoice sheets that show price changes on almost everything we buy.
  • Purchase checks: comparing purchases with revenue to spot anomalies, and authorising spend and projects.

The shift Prices that keep up with costs, and margins that don't quietly erode.

AREA 04

Cash, credit control & the finance team

  • Leading a team of five across sales and purchase ledgers, insurance claims and credit control.
  • Getting paid: credit control, escalated client conversations, debt collection and small-claims court when required.
  • Paying out: weekly payment runs, direct debits, staff expenses and company charge cards.
  • Systems: running the practice management system's pricing, catalogue and account set-up.

The shift Healthy cash flow and a team that knows what good looks like.

Talk it through

For employers

If you're hiring a Finance Business Partner, Finance Manager or Head of Finance: I've run month end, year end and audit for a complex, high-standard business. I've built the reports that leadership use, led and developed a finance team, and covered operations at senior level. I'm working towards CIMA, and I'm looking for a role where finance helps shape decisions rather than just recording them.

Questions

Which accounting software do you use?

Sage for over 13 years, plus Xero as a Certified Advisor. I'm comfortable taking data out of most systems into Excel, Access or SQL for analysis.

Is your experience only in veterinary?

My career has been in a specialist veterinary hospital, which is a busy, multi-department business with clinical, retail and insurance income. Management accounts, pricing, cash and team leadership work the same way in most service businesses.

Are you qualified?

I passed CIMA Foundation in 2026 and I'm now studying the Operational level. Before that I completed AAT Levels 2 and 3 and most of Level 4.
